What notice do I need to give a 4-year employee in BC?
Under the BC Employment Standards Act, a 4-year employee is entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks notice or pay in lieu. However, without an enforceable termination clause in their contract, common law may require significantly more — often 3 to 6 months for a mid-level role.
What if I want to terminate for just cause?
BC courts set a high bar for just cause. You need documented evidence of serious misconduct — wilful disobedience, dishonesty, or conduct fundamentally incompatible with employment. Without solid documentation, what looks like cause can quickly become a wrongful dismissal. We recommend a consultation before proceeding.

All the expertise.
None of the overhead.

A full-time HR coordinator in BC costs $55,000 to $70,000 in salary — plus CPP, EI, vacation pay, benefits, and overhead. That's a junior generalist, not a CPHR-certified senior practitioner.

LilyHR gives you senior HR expertise on a monthly retainer, at a fraction of that cost, with no hiring risk and no long-term commitment. Start this week, not in three months.
